Observe people who are good at their work—
    skilled workers are always in demand and admired;
    they don’t take a backseat to anyone. Proverbs 2

Recently many mourned the death of basketball great Kobe Bryant, his daughter and all those on the helicopter that crashed. Kobe had retired from basketball a couple of years before but was still the topic of discussion among those aspiring to be great as he was in his craft.

A couple of days before he passed I had heard an interview on YouTube where another player was talking about Kobe’s work ethic. Since his passing there has been a plethora of videos and podcast about his life and specifically his rise to stardom.

In all of the videos I have watched and podcast Kobe always talked about working to be the player he became. He just as Solomon tells us in our text today was an observer of players that had already been great at their craft. He talked about watching Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and others to see what made them great at the sport of basketball.

These were men that were skilled and worked hard to become better. In one interview Kobe talked about his work outs starting at 4 am while others would go at say 9 or some later. He stated that over time because he had at least two more work outs that the others in a day you begin to separate yourself from the pack and they won’t be able to catch up.

Solomon says, “skilled workers are always in demand and admired.” Kobe was just that admired for his skills and approach to the game he loved.

You and I can become skillful in our trade and in high demand too. It takes a disciplined life to rise above the crowd. Discipline is required to attain the skills necessary which will cause you to be in places that others desire but fail to achieve.

Often times we rely on our talents to get us where we want to go even neglecting the work to gain more skills. Disciplined training if your an athlete, soldier, speaker etc. gives you the edge over the crowd and equips your for a better life not just mediocre.

Prayer: Lord help us to be skillful in our work. Show us what we need to do daily to be better and gain new opportunities. Lord help us to be disciplined and prepare for the call you have placed on our lives. In Jesus Name Amen
